Subject: Kick Out the Jams

I've just returned from Fred "Sonic" Smith's funeral.  It was held at the
Old Mariner's Church, at the bottom of Woodward in the heart of the Motor
City, the same church where Fred and Patti were married 15 years ago.

After the funeral I drove around the deserted streets of Car Town for a
while, windows down, trying to remember what it smelled like back in 1970.
I didn't know Fred, never met him, but the MC5 playing in West Park was an
inspiration to me then, an indication that things didn't have to stay as
messed up as they were at the time if we didn't want them to be that way.
