Date: Sun, 28 Mar 93 17:29:32 EST From: Jim.Rees@umich.edu Subject: On the road in Ohio I'm sitting in my '72 Buick Centurion, parked at the Chestnut Grove cemetary near Bradner, Ohio. I'm typing this in on my notebook Mach system with disconnected afs, and in a minute I'll connect up to the Internet with my Oki cellular phone and Microcom modem to send this message and check for mail. Everything is running on car power -- my Buick is wired for 120 vac, of course. As I was leaving Ann Arbor, WEMU was doing a special show on Stuff Smith, the "other" jazz violinist. I'm out of range of Michigan radio now and I've got the Temptations playing on the 8-track. Travel through Ohio is always slow going for me, as I stop in all the little towns and poke around. Toledo takes time, too, as I drive in on Monroe street, over the Cherry street draw bridge, and through south (or is it east?) Toledo, past the Eastwood movie theater. I usually stop in Pemberville for coffee. My next stop will be Fostoria. There are five generations of the Rees family buried here at the cemetary. The front markers are leaning precariously towards US 23. It's the same US 23 that runs through Ann Arbor, but here it's a two line blacktop highway. My destination on this trip is Columbus. I don't know if I'll make it before dark. If not, maybe I'll stop in Upper Sandusky, Marion, or Delaware for the night.
