Purchase Radio

Please read my license notice before copying my photos.

Purchase Radio was a wonderful old radio shop located on Hoover in Ann Arbor for many years. My dad bought me my first serious short wave receiver, a Hallicrafters SX-71, there when I was about eight. The original owner, Roy Purchase, died in 1987 and the store was taken over by his son-in-law Dan McCollough. Purchase went out of business February 16, 2007 when Dan retired. I took most of these photos the day they closed. Most of the inventory was bought by Van's Appliance & Electronics at 2828 Lewis Ave, Ida, MI.

Dan and Ola Jeanne (Roy's daughter) moved to Minnesota after selling the store. She died in 2018, he died in 2025. John Ransom ran Purchase Camera until it closed around 1990 then went to work for Dan at the radio store. He died in 2015.

Roy lived in a big house on Newport Road. It was on top of one of the highest hills in town, and he bought it because it's a good location for radio work. When his family sold the house there was a big estate sale. He had the most amazing library. I bought an autographed first edition of Roentgen's 1895 book on X-rays.
